"On behalf of the men and women of the Connecticut State Police, we express our deepest sympathies to the people of Lewiston, Maine," said Colonel Stavros Mellekas. "This assault on innocent citizens is deeply disturbing and heartbreaking."
The shootings happened Wednesday night, Oct. 25, starting at a bowling alley hosting a Youth Night at around 6:20 p.m., and a restaurant holding a cornhole competition in Lewiston.
Seven fatalities have been confirmed at Sparetime Recreation and nine at Schemengees Bar, according to the Androscoggin County Sheriff.
A person of interest in the Maine shootings has been identified by police as 40-year-old Robert Card. He remains on the run as of early Thursday morning, Oct. 26, and should be considered armed and dangerous, according to police.
Mellekas said the department is focusing on protecting communities within the state.
"No specific threats have been received, but in the interest of public safety, we are closely monitoring the situation and remain in close communication with our regional law enforcement partners, Mellekas said.
"The Connecticut State Police are prepared to address any threats to our local communities should they arise."
The department is also ready to assist law enforcement in Maine if needed, he added.
"Our thoughts are with the community and the first responders of Lewiston," Mellekas said.
