Here are some of the best hiking trails in and around the Elm City.

Partly within city limits, West Rock Ridge State Park has to be a stop for any outdoors lover.

From the top of the ridge, you’ll find spectacular views of New Haven Harbor and Long Island Sound.

The park offers hiking — with 21 miles of trails, mountain biking, fishing, boating, and horseback riding.

If you're looking for something a little more off the beaten path, Hammonasset Beach State Park, a short drive away in Madison, is for you.

The park offers a variety of trails for different skill levels. These trails range from gentle beach walks and serene boardwalk strolls to challenging backcountry trails with spectacular coastal views.

Along the way, visitors can take in sights such as birds, marshes, and lagoons, while observing plenty of natural beauty. Be sure to check out the Meigs Point Nature Center.

In neighboring North Haven you’ll find Quinnipiac River State Park. The over-320-acre park offers hiking, hunting, boating, and fishing.

Paddling through the tidal marsh puts you up close to a unique ecosystem where you can ducks, osprey, sandpipers, snowy egrets, and great egrets among others.

Whether you're looking for an easy stroll, an adrenaline rush, or a serene day trip, there is something for everyone to explore in and around New Haven.
