Officers responded to a home in the Hill neighborhood of New Haven just before 11 p.m. Sunday, March 16, where they found the boy on the kitchen floor with a gunshot wound, New Haven Public Information Officer Christian Burkhart told Daily Voice.

New Haven police noted the boy lived at the home, and officers discovered a gun inside. Following an initial investigation, police believe the shooting was accidental and said there is no ongoing threat to the community.

A parent was at home at the time of the shooting, Burkhart said. The child's name has not been released.

New Haven Police Chief Karl Jacobson said the tragedy should never have happened.

"While our detectives are actively investigating the sequence of events that led to the loss of an 8-year-old to a shooting, what is clear is that this was a tragic, preventable, and senseless death," he said.

New Haven investigators are urging anyone with information on the shooting to contact detectives at (203) 946-6304. Anonymous tips can be submitted at (866) 888-TIPS (8477).
