American Among 16 Dead After Lisbon Streetcar Derails; 21 Injured A sightseeing ride on one of Portugal's most iconic trams turned tragic when a streetcar derailed, killing 16 people and injuring 21 others, officials said. Portuguese police said Thursday, Sept. 4, that several of those killed on the Elevador da Gloria funicular in the capital city of Lisbon were foreigners, including one American. Aaron Boupendza, a former striker for FC Cincinnati of Major League Soccer, died on Wednesday, April 16, after falling from a building at his home in China. He was age 28.
