The incident occurred on Thursday night, April 3 when the 24-year-old competitor, Dylan Grant, was thrown off his bull and trampled in the second round of the Wharton County Youth Fair Extreme Bulls competition in Texas.
Despite the immediate response of first responders who stabilized him in an ambulance, he was subsequently airlifted to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center in Houston, where he tragically succumbed to his injuries.
He had been involved in the sport since obtaining a PRCA permit in 2018 and had participated in numerous PRORODEO and Xtreme Bulls events, the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association said.
A Wyoming native and resident, Grant was a 2023 graduate of the University of Wyoming, where he was a member of the Cowboys' rodeo team.
"Dylan was one of my first friends at UW and was always so kind with the goofiest loving personality," a college classmate wrote on a social media thread. "Even after graduating I’d still see him at rodeos and he was so friendly and would always say hi.
"My heart is absolutely broken. Sending all my thoughts and prayers to his family in this devastating time."
