The avalanche struck in the Alaska backcountry near Girdwood, a small resort town, late Tuesday afternoon, March 4, local time. The skiers, part of a heli-skiing group, were reportedly trapped under the snow when the massive avalanche occurred.  The depth of the snowpack poses a significant recovery challenge, with estimates suggesting the skiers could be buried anywhere between 40 and 100 feet. Fire Crews Cut Driver From Overturned Car In Waterford Quick-thinking fire crews rescued a driver Monday morning, Feb. 24, in Waterford following a rollover accident on Route 85 near the intersection of Dayton Road. At approximately 5:45 a.m., a vehicle rolled over, prompting members of Oswegatchie Fire Company 4 to extricate the driver from the car and transfer them into a waiting ambulance, the department said on Facebook. A follow-up call to the fire company was not immediately returned, and the severity of the driver’s injuries remains unclear.
