19: Study Reveals Which Masks Are Most Effective Battling Virus
A new study found that the N95 and KN95 masks are significantly more effective at preventing airborne transmission of COVID-19 than cloth or surgical facemasks. Experiments for the study were conducted by the Fluid Mechanics Research Laboratory at the University of Waterloo. The study was published online in July. Researchers reported that all the masks tested in the study provided protection in the immediate vicinity of the wearer "primarily through the redirection and reduction of expiratory momentum." 19: Fairfield County Now Added To CDC's 'High Transmission' Category
Fairfield County has been added to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's list of counties that recorded a high level of community transmission of COVID-19. In the week from Tuesday, Aug. 10 through Monday, Aug. 16, Fairfield County had a high level of community transmission, according to the CDC. This means at least 100 COVID-19 cases were reported per 100,000 people during that time period. Mask mandates in Connecticut will now be in the hands of local municipalities under a new order from Gov. Ned Lamont. Lamont announced this week that he has signed an executive order that will provide municipal leaders with the option of requiring masks in indoor public spaces, regardless of vaccination status, as the Delta variant of the COVID-19 virus rapidly spreads.
