10-Foot Great White Shark Spotted Off New England Coast
Like a Massachusett's "snowbird" heading South after too many Northeastern winters in reverse, a great white shark recently traveled from Florida to cooler waters in Cape Cod Bay. OCEARCH, the nonprofit that tracks several turtles' and sharks' migrations with GPS, reported that Miss May, a 10-foot, 846-pound great white, was last pinged off the Massachusetts coast south of Provincetown on Tuesday, Aug. 27. Two surfers swam away with their lives, but they reached the beach with a whale of a tale after their encounter with a 10-foot great white shark off Cape Cod over the weekend. One That Got Away: Man Fishing From Cape Cod Beach Hooks Great White Shark
A Massachusetts angler was in for a major surprise when he hooked a great white shark while fishing in Cape Cod. Matt Pieciak posted a video of the moment on his Instagram page, writing: "A Great White Shark steals the fish off our line at Nauset Beach, Cape Cod." NBC Boston reported that the 25-year-old was fishing with friends on Sunday, Aug. 8, when he saw the rod start to bend. He said his cousin captured video as Pieciak tried to reel in the shark. NYC Woman Swimming Becomes Victim Of Maine's First Fatal Shark Attack
A New York City woman has been identified as the victim of the first fatal shark attack ever documented in the state of Maine. Officials from the Maine Department of Marine Resources announced on Tuesday, July 28 that Julie Dimperio Holowach, 63, was attacked by a great white shark on Monday, July 27. A witness saw Holowach swimming off the shore of Bailey Island in Harpswell, Maine, when the attack happened, the Maine Marine Patrol said.
