The company reached a settlement in the class action lawsuit related to the incident that exposed customers' personal information, including driver's licenses, credit card numbers, dates of birth, phone numbers, and names. The data breach happened between Saturday, Aug. 3, and Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2024.
Avis has denied wrongdoing but agreed to settle the case. Eligible customers who submit valid claims can seek reimbursement of up to $5,000 for proven out-of-pocket losses tied to the breach.
Class members can also claim a pro rata cash payment, even if they didn't experience out-of-pocket losses. Those payments will be distributed from the remaining settlement fund after approved claims, legal fees, and administration costs are paid.
Online claims must be submitted online by Sunday, June 21, and mailed claim forms must be postmarked by the same date. Those who do nothing will remain in the settlement, give up their rights to sue Avis over the claims, and receive no money.
The deadline to exclude yourself from the settlement or file an objection is Friday, May 22.
A final approval hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, July 28, in federal court in New Jersey.
