A Connecticut man has been arrested and charged with vandalizing a Christopher Columbus monument in Meriden last month, authorities said.
Marco Mejil Jr., 30, of Meriden, turned himself in to police on Tuesday, March 18, after a warrant was issued for his arrest, authorities said.
The investigation began after officers responded to reports of vandalism near East Main Street and Broad Street on Feb. 25, where a statue of Christopher Columbus had been covered in graffiti. A Connecticut mother said she survived a terrifying ordeal when a screaming man, covered in mud, tried to break into her home late last week and threatened to harm her.
Joshua Pirie, 38, of Morris, was arrested Friday, March 14, following a violent outburst at a home that left a mother fearing for her life, according to Connecticut State Police.
The woman said she heard screaming outside her home in Morris just before 3 p.m. Friday. When she looked out, she saw Pirie shirtless and covered in mud. He grabbed the woman's 11-year-old dog and began strangling it, she told police.

A Bloomfield man is behind bars after police say he fired shots outside a West Hartford building earlier this month.
Taffarie Murphy, 43, was arrested Friday, Feb. 28, and charged with unlawful discharge of a firearm, first-degree reckless endangerment, criminal possession of a firearm, and first-degree criminal mischief, according to West Hartford police.
Officers responded to 450 New Park Ave. on Thursday, Feb. 20, after receiving multiple reports of gunfire. They found evidence of shots fired and property damage, but no injuries were reported, authorities said.

Some people attending SantaCon 2024 in Hoboken, including several from out of state, couldn't help but end up on the naughty list.
Hoboken police said eight people were arrested at the annual event on Saturday, Dec. 21, where people dress up as Santa Claus for a bar crawl, a spinoff of the popular event held every year in New York City (scroll down for details).
Overall, police issued 16 traffic summonses, dealt with 13 fights, and responded to three motor vehicle crashes, police said. Last year saw only two arrests.

A 19-year-old man from Connecticut is facing numerous charges after allegedly stealing a vehicle in Westchester and leading police on a multi-agency pursuit, authorities said.
The incident began on Thursday morning, Nov. 28, when a West Harrison resident reported suspicious activity involving two vehicles, a white Mercedes Benz and a dark-colored Audi A5, on Columbus Avenue, the Harrison Police Department announced on Monday, Dec. 2.

A 29-year-old man has been charged with three Fairfield County burglaries, including one in which he allegedly stole more than $25,000 in jewelry.
The burglaries occurred on Saturday, Nov. 11, 2023, in Darien and Greenwich.

A Connecticut man is behind bars after allegedly being caught inside burglarizing a smoke shop.
The incident occurred in New Haven County around 10 p.m., Tuesday, June 18, at the LVL Up Smoke Shop in Meriden.
According to Lt. Darrin McKay of the Meriden Police, a patrol officer responded to the store after receiving a burglar alarm notice.
