Taco John's is in the process of opening 22 restaurants across Massachusetts and Connecticut, the company said in a news release on Wednesday, April 9. Three locations have already opened in the Bay State, with the newest one at 77 Summer Street in Boston's Downtown Crossing section.
The chain began its New England expansion in 2023 with the opening of restaurants in Lawrence and Leominster. Before 2023, the nearest Taco John's to Massachusetts was in Ohio.
Reliance Hospitality Group signed the 22-unit development agreement with Taco John's back in 2021. The company is planning to open a fourth Taco John's in the summer and is selecting sites for five more locations in the greater Boston area.
Arsal Jaffery, a co-founder of Reliance Hospitality, has more than a decade in fast food management, operating Wendy's restaurants in New York state and the Hartford, Connecticut, metro area.

"When we first experienced Taco John's, we knew it was special – the brand's dedication to bold, innovative flavors and fresh ingredients stood out in the quick-service space. The enthusiasm and loyalty of Taco John's fans across the country spoke volumes, and we saw a clear opportunity to bring that same energy to Boston."
The first Taco John's location for Connecticut has been proposed in Newington, according to site plans on the town's website. The restaurant is planned to be built near the corner of the Berlin Turnpike and Costello Road.
Taco John's is best known for its Potato Olés – a crunchy potato snack similar to miniature hash browns. The chain's menu features other Tex-Mex staples like tacos, breakfast burritos, and quesadillas, along with desserts such as churros and Mexican donut bites.
The company is also famous for once owning a trademark for the phrase "Taco Tuesday." Taco John's had the trademark in every state except New Jersey from 1989 until giving up its claim to the popular phrase in 2023, NPR reported.
Founded in Wyoming in 1969, Taco John’s has nearly 350 restaurants in 22 states, primarily in states like Minnesota, Iowa, and the Dakotas.
