Consistency will be drilled into the heads of the Wilton boys' soccer team this season. After a last-minute victory over a New Canaan team that made it to the state finals last season, the Warriors entered Monday susceptible to a letdown. Though the defense held strong, passing on offense faltered as Wilton fought to a 0-0 tie against Fairfield Warde.
"We're lucky to come away with a point today," Wilton head coach, Jim Lewicki said. "Warde played a very good game today. We're more of a speed team, and I think Warde took us out of it because they have a slower style."
Wilton came out flat against the Mustangs, playing defense for most of the first half. Warde's Taylor Rosenbloom and Carpenter Guthrie kept Warriors goalie Mike DeSantis busy with shots on goal. Wilton's best chance came in the closing moments of the first half when Evan Owen sent a sizzler at the net only to be stopped by a spectacular dive by Warde's keeper, Dylan Strachan.
Wilton controlled the ball for much of the second half but was caught holding the ball too often. The Warriors got only five shots off on net in the second half but had far more opportunities. Warde defenders flummoxed forward Evan Roux, forcing him to the outside on three consecutive drives. Roux's pleas for a penalty to the refs fell on deaf ears. The frustration on the Wilton bench made it feel like a loss rather than a tie.
"It's a simple game, and they're not being simple about it," Lewicki said. "Show me some consistencythat's all I'm looking for. I feel like every time it's back to the drawing board."
Wilton goes back to that drawing board when it travels to Stamford on Wednesday. Wilton stands at 1-0-2 on the season.
