Wilton Swimmers Set Club Records At County Meet

WILTON, Conn. – Several Wilton swimmers broke club records and helped Shore & Country Club finish third at the Fairfield County Swim League county championships.

The team’s third-place finish was the best in team history. Shore & CC finished fifth last year and ninth in 2010.

Emma Holmquist set a club record in the girls 14-and-under 50-meter breaststroke, 37.65. Jill Rutherford set the old mark in 1978. Holmquist took fifth in that event, and was sixth in the 100 meter individual medley and seventh in the 50 free.

Stephen Holmquist set a club record in the boys 17-and-under 100 meter individual medley. After breaking the mark at the divisional championships, Holmquist bettered his time again in the championships. His 1:01.25 finish is the new club mark. He also broke the 50-meter backstroke record set in 1979 by Mike Kupan. Holmquist swam 29.29. He finished second in both races.

Caroline O’Brien set records in the girls 17-and-under 50-meter butterfly and the 100-meter individual medley. She finished third in the butterfly and fourth in the IM. O’Brien ends her club career with seven club records and four county championships.

The final club record to fall was the 200-meter freestyle relay with Lucas Balderrama, Joshua Balderrama, Guido Balderrama and Stephen Holmquist.

Other top swimmers from Wilton for Shore & CC included Caroline Hess, Rory Hess, Ellen Holmquist and Mason Molina. Melinda Henesy also performed well in diving.
