Wilton School Falls in Girls Hoop Tourney Finals

WILTON, Conn. – Trinity Catholic Middle School outscored Our Lady of Fatima 17-2 over the final 2:25 in Wilton Friday to win the girls varsity division of the Tyler Ugolyn Tournament.

Our Lady of Fatima hosted the tournament, which is named after a former basketball player and student at the school who died in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Mary Lynch scored 15 points for Fatima and Mariah Ventrella added 14. Tiana England had 20 points to lead Stamford's Trinity.

The Wilton girls led 45-42 after Colleen Bannon scored with 2:25 remaining. After England scored with 2:05 left, Trinity went ahead for good on a three-pointer by Laura Green. 

Lynch and Ventrella were named to the all-tournament team. Mary Conlon won the school’s Tyler Ugolyn award, which is presented for sportsmanship, academic achievement, and school and community involvement.

The tournament included teams in fourth through eighth grade from schools in Wilton, Norwalk, Stamford, Fairfield, Weston, Newtown and Monroe. This the fifth year the tournament has been named in honor of Ugolyn, who was a basketball star at Ridgefield High School and Columbia University.
