Wilton Hosts Women's State Platform Championships

WILTON, Conn. – A new champion will be crowned in Wednesday’s Connecticut State Women’s Paddle Championship at the Lake Club in Wilton. Wilton’s Amy Shay and Stamford’s Cynthia Dardis, who have won the tournament six years in a row, are focusing instead on running the tournament. That leaves the tournament wide open for the next champion.

"There were a lot of good players that were being left out of the draw, so we thought we’d not play,’’ Shay said. “Certainly life is a lot easier when you’re just running it and not playing in it, too.”

Most of the players are from Fairfield County. Besides the Lake Club, which will host the finals, teams will also play at Woodway Country Club, New Canaan Field Club and Wilton Riding Club.

Competition begins at 8:30 a.m., with the final scheduled for late in the afternoon. The Lake Club, where Shay is a member, has been the main tournament host for the past three years. “There’s a lot of good teams and a lot of good players,’’ Shay said. “It’s going to be a good tournament.”
