Wilton 8th-Grade Girls Cruise to Title

The Wilton eighth-grade girls travel basketball team made sure the Fairfield County Basketball League "AA" Division Championship was never in doubt. Wilton crushed New Milford, 52-18, on Sunday at Danbury High School to take home the title.

Wilton dominated in just about every category, capping a near-perfect season with their most complete game yet. The girls shot nearly 50 percent from the field and racked up the turnovers.

Wilton's entire team kept it going all four quarters and never let New Milford mount a threat. The Wilton attack remained balanced throughout, and it showed on the scorecard.

Haley English led the team with 12 points, and Hannah Maatallah added 10. Erin Cunningham and Erica Meyer each contributed eight points. Makenna Pearsall dominated the boards with eight rebounds.

Wilton finishes its convincing league championship season at 23-2. It was the third league championship in a row for this group of girls, who took home titles in sixth and seventh grades as well. With dominance like that, Wilton High School has quite a crop of girls to look forward to joining its basketball program next season.

The Wilton girls also won the Joe Coppo Tournament in December. Team members include Cori Cannavino, Erin Cunningham, Sara Dickinson, Haley English, Hannah Maatallah, Erica Meyer, Makenna Pearsall, Anna Pucci, Alyssa Rubsam and Casey Tucker.
