Wilton 6th Grade Girls Close Season on High Note

The Wilton sixth-grade girls, sponsored by Tavern on Seven, capped off their final weekend of Fairfield County Youth Basketball League regular season games with two wins at home. Wilton led from wire to wire Saturday against Brookfield, coming away with a 26-15 victory.

Sharpshooter Hayley Meyer pumped in eight points, including a three-pointer. The consistently aggressive Ava Martinelli had an all-around solid performance, netting six points, five rebounds and two steals. Caylin Cannavino dominated the boards with 11 rebounds and contributed four points, four steals and an assist. Margaret Smith, Marissa Pucci and Eliza Ward gave solid performances to round out the scoring attack.

Elizabeth Healy gave another tremendous defensive effort, pulling down six rebounds and five steals. Mackenzie Holmgren continued to be a force in the paint with five rebounds, a steal and an assist.

Though Wilton dominated its game Saturday, the Sunday matchup against Westport turned out to be more of a nail-biter. With Wilton up by four at the half, Westport came back to tie the score at 16 midway through the third period. On a timely fourth quarter steal and beautiful assist by Healy (two rebounds, seven steals, one assist), Meyer (six points, one rebound) took the long open court pass in for a layup, putting the Warriors up by three. Westport answered with another bucket. But Meyer answered with a long pretty jump shot of her own, sealing a 22-19 win for Wilton.

Pucci led the team against Westport with eight points and seven rebounds. Smith and Martinelli helped control the boards with a team-high nine rebounds each.

The Wilton sixth grade girls end the regular season with an overall record of 11-8 and a fourth place seed entering the playoffs. The league playoffs begin Thursday night at Danbury PAL. Wilton takes on Newtown in the opening round.
