Wilton Swimmer Enjoys Taking on World's Best

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – KC Moss will gladly tell you her summer was better than yours.

Moss is still grinning from ear to ear after taking to the water with some of the world’s best youth swimmers in August at the FINA Junior World Championships in Lima, Peru.

“It was definitely the best experience of my life,” said Moss, 17, who swims for the New Canaan YMCA Caimans. “It was great to meet other talented swimmers from across the country and around the world. It’s cool to be in a pool of fast youth swimmers.”

Moss, now a senior at Wilton High School, was chosen by USA Swimming to represent the country at the world championship event, joining a team of 40 boys and girls under the age of 18. Her best showings were seventh-place finishes in the 200-meter breaststroke and the 50-meter breaststroke.

“I think every competition I go through, I try to take something from it. I’ve really improved a lot" because of the trip, she said. “Being in Peru, there was a great sense of pride representing the USA.”

Moss has been swimming since she was 8 and is dedicated to the sport, spending two to four hours in a pool every day. She previously swam for the Wilton YMCA but joined the New Canaan Caimans to work with New Canaan coach Jason Paige.

Paige said Moss "has added a great sense of maturity to our program and has been an inspiration to many of her teammates."

The world championship experience will come in handy this season, in next summer’s U.S. Olympic Trials and in college next fall. Moss is focused on five schools and visited Princeton University in New Jersey earlier this month. The recruitment process has been fun. “I love the coaches and the teams I’ve met,” she said. “I’ll almost kind of miss it when I’m done.”
