Ludlowe Wins Wild Game

When Kurt Marut takes the hill for Wilton High School the other team usually does not fare well as Marut took an 8-0 record into the opening round of the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference tournament. Fortunately for Fairfield Ludlowe he did not have his usual game, and the Falcons were able to pull out the victory, 12-7, and move on to the semifinals.

“It all starts on the mound and Kurt just did not have it today,” Warriors head coach Tim Eagen said.  The Falcons kept to their game plan of being patient at the plate and trying to make Marut work as much and as hard as they could.

After Wilton gave up four runs in the top of the first, they came right back and tied the game up in the bottom of the first, with Marut helping his own cause by slicing a two-run double to left field.  However, after that Ludlowe went right back to work scoring at least one run in every inning except for the sixth, while the Wilton bats were being silenced by Alex Cappoziello.

Capoziello relieved Zach Garoffolo with one out in the first inning. The 6-3 senior went four innings, striking out two while giving up two runs, one earned, while picking up his first victory. “He did a phenomenal job,” Ludlowe head coach Keith O’Rourke said. “When you pitch ahead you make the batters more defensive.”

Ludlowe will play Tuesday at 5 p.m. against Westhill at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard while Wilton prepares for the state tournament.
