Host Wilton Boys Fall in Basketball Final

WILTON, Conn. – St. Thomas Aquinas, of Fairfield, built an 11-point halftime lead and went on to beat Our Lady of Fatima, 43-30, in the boys varsity division championship game of the Tyler Ugolyn basketball tournament. Wilton's Our Lady of Fatima hosts the two-week tournament, which includes fourth- through eighth-grade teams.

Cieran O’Reilly scored 19 points to pace Fatima. Sam Britt scored 17 to lead St. Thomas Aquinas.

Britt scored nine points in the first half as St. Thomas took a 23-12 lead at halftime. The Falcons scored the first four points of the second half to get within 23-16, but the Fairfield team went on a 14-3 scoring spurt to take a commanding 37-19 lead late in the third quarter. Our Lady of Fatima did not whittle the lead into single digits in the final quarter.

Zach Duffy had four points for Fatima and Andrew Manion had three. O’Reilly and Manion joined Brendan Beiser, Brendan Carey and Chase Mascolo on the all-tournament team.

Murphy also received the boys' Tyler Ugolyn Award for Our Lady of Fatima. The award is for sportsmanship, school and community involvement, and academic achievement.

The tournament included schools from  Wilton, Norwalk, Stamford, Fairfield, Weston, Newtown and Monroe. This the fifth year the tournament has been named in honor of Ugolyn, a basketball star at Ridgefield High School and Columbia University who died in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. There were eight teams in the boys varsity division.
