Greenwich, Darien Players Team to Win Wilton Open

WILTON, Conn. – Juan Arraya and Boie Bogardus captured the A draw in the 29th annual Wilton Open on Saturday at the Wilton YMCA.

The tournament featured 64 two-man teams in A and B Divisions. Greenwich resident Arraya, director of Racquet Sports at Aspetuck Valley Country Club in Weston, and Darien resident Bogardus won 6-4, 6-4 in the finals over Terry Doran and Anton Mavrin.

Arraya and Bogardus, the head paddle professional at the New Canaan Field Club, were the No. 1 seeds. Doran and Mavrin were the No. 2 seeds. Bogardus and Arraya rolled through their five matches without losing a set.

In the consolation round, brothers Paul and Bo Beatty teamed to win the final over David Mueller and David Wolpov. 

Simon Porter and David Grow won the Last Chance final, while Thomas de Liefde and Jim Lipinsky were Reprieve winners.

In the B Draw, top-seeded Lawrence Garinger and Richard Greene won the final over Kevin Dillon and Marq Meller, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4. In the B consolation final, Chris Johnson and George Rzepecki topped Brian Callahan and Rob Zabronsky.

Bill Lawrence and Rich Nichol won the Last Chance final, while Christian Bangert and Stephan Ramirez won the Reprieve final.

The tournament featured teams primarily from Fairfield County. Players from New York and New Jersey also participated in the final paddle tennis tournament of the season.
