The Wilton girls' soccer team saw firsthand the powerful efficiency of the Darien offense on Monday. A team that has outscored opponents 22-2, the Warriors were on their heels early, trying to dig out of a 3-0 deficit. Wilton came out strong in the second half, but it was too much to overcome as the Warriors fell, 3-1.
Meaghan Latella scored Wilton's lone goal early in second half. The Warriors seemed to be refocused after the break and pressured Darien for most of the final 40 minutes. Wilton had seven shots on goal in the second half compared to just two in the first. Tegan Helms tried to help her team out with some great passing, but Wilton players could not cash in.
Darien's Georgie Highton gave the Warriors fits all day with two goals and an assist. Wilton resorted to double coverage on Highton at times during the second half, which did the trick. Darien only managed two shots in the second half. Latella said if the team can come out stronger early, they could be very successful.
"Darien's a great team. We just weren't there in the first half," Latella said. "We're capable of doing those little things to win, we just didn't today. Our goal is to make the playoffs. This is a young team, but we have a lot of talent."
Wilton now stands at 1-2-2 on the year. The Warriors travel to Danbury on Wednesday for a 4:15 p.m. game.
