WILTON, Conn. -- Five athletes from the Wilton Running Club qualified for the Junior Olympic National Track and Field Championship, which will be held this week in Sacramento, Calif.

Each athlete qualified by placing in the top five in their events at the Region Championship held earlier this month in Albany, N.Y.

The Wilton athletes headed for Sacramento are Ashley Nicoletti of Newtown, John Wise of New Canaan and Wilton residents Wooder Thoby, Shelby DeJana and Jonathon Greco.

DeJana qualified in the 13-14 age group in the 200 meter hurdles by shaving nearly a full second off her qualifying time and finishing fifth in a time of 31.67. DeJana also made the finals in the 100 meter hurdles finishing 8th in 18.99.

Thoby qualified in the 13-14 age group long jump with a jump of 17 feet, 5/14 inches. "This is Wooder’s first year in track and field and he is an outstanding jumper and developing into quite a sprinter, too,” coach Kevin Foley said.

Nicoletti is making her fifth consecutive national championship appearance after finishing third in the 100 and fifth in the 200 at the regional meet. She competes in the 11-12-year-old age group.

“She may be young but Ashley is a talented veteran and her times at the region meet are not indicative of her real talent. She had to fight some pretty terrible conditions to finish where she did and she knows how to finish a sprint race,” said Foley.

Wise also qualified in the 100 and 200 in the 13-14 age group. He ran 12.86 in the 100 and 25.38 in the 200. He has shaved two seconds off his 200 meter time this spring. "That is nothing less than amazing,'' Foley said. "He works hard on his technique, is very competitive and it would not surprise me to see him go sub-25 in the 200 in California."

Greco who placed 5th in the 11-12 age group 400 meter in a time of 1:06.59, a personal best.
