A Greenwich special education program coordinator will be leaving the school district to become principal of the Miller-Driscoll Elementary School in Wilton, according to officials.

Kathryn Coon, who has been with Greenwich since 1995, will take over at Miller-Driscoll Elementary on July 1. She replaces Interim Principal Bernadette Hess, who took over leadership of the elementary school in January after Cheryl Jensen Gerner, the school's former principal, retired.

In a statement Monday, Greenwich Superintendent of Schools Bill McKersie congratulated Coon on her new position.

"Kudos to Kathy for her two decades of excellent, dedicated and spirited service to thousands of Greenwich students and families," McKersie said. "She has had a life changing impact on so many. We will miss her, but we are thrilled she has landed a principalship in Wilton, a top-flight sister district."

Coon has held numerous roles during her tenure in Greenwich, including special education teacher, instructional coach, assistant principal and district program coordinator for elementary special education services, according to Greenwich officials.

In her latter role, which she will maintain through the end of the current school year, she is responsible for supporting Greenwich schools with instructional strategies and individual education plans (IEPs) for students, the statement said. Coon also has been active in various district organizations, including the Superintendent's Achievement Gap Committee and several districtwide committees that develop curriculum, teacher evaluation plans and professional learning opportunities.

Greenwich's Director of Pupil Personnel Services Mary Forde praised Coon for her efforts over the years.

"She always embraced each new responsibility with enthusiasm, humor, dedication and passion," Forde said. "She is a consummate professional and sets the standard as a learner, leader, colleague and advocate.

"Although she will be sorely missed, she leaves behind an amazing legacy of programs, procedures, systems, initiatives and most of all, the families and students she has touched.”

Greenwich officials said the district will begin the search for Coon's replacement "promptly."
