Students Take Up Sondheim Challenge

Wilton High School's drama club is not one to back down and is proving that this year by performing Stephen Sondheim's musical "Into the Woods" one of the most difficult plays to produce for the spring musical.

Marty Kozlowski, the head of drama productions for the high school said, "It is good to see them (the student actors as well as the professional orchestra) step up to the challenge." She then continued remaking Cinderella's costume so the actress who has to wear it can make the quick costume change needed during the play.

"Into the Woods" is one of the most difficult plays to perform with constant music playing, and cuing up movements by the actors with the music. Also, the songs are not melodic making it very difficult to sing and play.

On Wednesday, backstage at Clune Auditorium students were doing each other's hair, painting on makeup, fitting costumes and wigs and speaking and singing into microphones, as they hurried to get ready fro the final dress rehearsal.

Annabelle Fox, a senior who is playing Little Red Riding Hood, and will continue her acting career at Belmont University next fall described successfully performing the musical as, "It's going to be the biggest reward."

The spring musical is the fourth and final performance of the year having already done a fall show, and two over the winter. The spring musical always features the best actors, has the highest budget and is usually more ambitious than the other plays performed earlier in the year.

The play was performed over the weekend.
