Student Artists Open Show at Wilton Library

Zach Muraskin proudly displayed his contribution to a third grade art project at Cider Mill school Monday night at the Wilton Library. "I want to keep making art," he said, holding his ceramic fish. "Art is my favorite class. Even more than gym."

Zach was at the library for the opening of the annual display of works by students from all grade levels in the town's school system. It was a display not only of execution, but of evolution as well. Visitors could see the progression of artistic skills and vision through the progressing age levels.

"It's nice to come here and see students you had in elementary school exhibiting their works as high schoolers," said Jennifer Eyikan, an art teacher at Miller Driscoll elementary school.

Rusty Hurd, instructional leader for the art department at Wilton High School, noted that the show has been going on for 25 years, more than twice as long as a student's education lifespan from kindergarten to high school graduation. "What's nice about having it here is that everyone in town can see it, and all the different schools get to see each other's work."

In addition to graphic arts that hung on the walls, musical arts were on display as well, with groups from the various schools providing entertainment throughout the opening reception.

"This exhibit is our showcase" said Hurd. "It's the one time our art students can see their work displayed publicly." The exhibit, which includes 500 pieces of artwork, from paintings to masks, sculptures, multi-dimensional installations and fashion designs, will be at the library through the rest of the month.
