The project’s objective “is to extend the useful life of the school building for 25 to 30 more years and to add dedicated space to serve a growing special needs prekindergarten population,” according to a website maintained by the school’s building committee and community volunteers.
The project’s estimated total cost is $50 million, with an anticipated state reimbursement of $6.1 million, leaving Wilton with an anticipated bill of $43.9 million. Construction began Dec. 28 and is expected to be completed in December 2017. Miller-Driscoll School serves the prekindergarten to second grade population in Wilton. The project should add 25 to 30 years of life to the building, make the necessary repairs to the building and provide sufficient, appropriate and dedicated Pre-K space, per state mandate.
The project includes the plans to do the following:
- Complete infrastructure upgrades to the roof, windows, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, lighting and technology systems;
- Meet current code requirements for occupants health, safety and access; Improve comfort and security of students and staff;
- Improve energy efficiency;
- Provide long-term improvements to teaching and learning environments;
- Improve pedestrian and vehicular safety on the grounds.
