Wilton Police Investigate $900 'Grandparent Scam'

WILTON, Conn. – A "grandparent scam" in which an elderly Cheese Spring Road man reported losing $900 is being investigated by the Wilton Police.

The 85-year-old told police on Jan. 30 that he was called by a person claiming to be his grandson. Police said the caller claimed he needed $900 to get bailed out of a jail in Mexico. The Wilton resident then wired money. Police said the resident found out that his grandson was not in Mexico or in jail. He attempted to stop the money transfer, they said, but it had already gone through.

Wilton Police Capt. John Lynch said the department periodically warns residents about such scams, which usually target the elderly. Lynch urged residents to use caution and ask police for help if they are unsure after receiving a call requesting money.
