Wilton Police Department Giving Out Annual Awards At Trackside

WILTON, Conn. -- The Wilton Police Department invites the public to attend as it hands out its annual awards at Trackside in a ceremony at 6 p.m. Monday, March 14.

Sgt. Thomas "TJ" Tunney, who died earlier this year, will be honored by the Wilton Police Department with the Community Police Officer of the Year Award during their annual department awards ceremony on March 14.

Sgt. Tom "TJ" Tunney, who died earlier this year, will be honored with the Community Police Officer of the Year Award, created in his honor. 

He began his career with the Wilton Police Department in 1985 and was promoted to the rank of sergeant in 2000. During his career, Tunney received many commendations, as well as the department's Medal of Valor Award, one of the highest honors. He also received the New England Association -- Chiefs of Police Medal of Valor and the American Red Cross Hero's Award for rescuing a man who was trapped in a burning car after a crash.

Throughout his career, Tunney received many letters of praise for his involvement with the community. He was a great advocate for the people of Wilton, and was well respected by his peers, officials said.

In years to come, this award will be granted to a member of the Wilton Police Department who distinguished themselves from their peers by their actions involving the Wilton Community. The award will acknowledge members of the department who have demonstrated outstanding service to the community with particular emphasis on the Wilton Police values of integrity, respect, professionalism, and community support.

Other awards to be presented during the ceremony include:

  • Medal of Honor
  • Medal of Valor
  • Meritorious Police Service
  • Emergency Medical Service
  • Citation of Commendation.

Residents, family and friends are invited to the event which begins at 6 p.m. Refreshments will be served following the ceremony.
