WILTON, Conn. Two Bridgeport women are facing felony identity theft-related charges after being arrested by Wilton Police in connection with an investigation into how more than $1,400 in money was siphoned from bank accounts.
Worneversteen McCoy, 35, of 129 Sage Ave., Apt. 1, Bridgeport, and Mentael Mota, 25, of 153 Main St., Bridgeport, turned themselves in to Wilton Police July 10. Both were charged with one count of trafficking in personal identifying information and four counts of second-degree conspiracy to commit identity theft.
Police said the arrests stem from an investigation that began in October into complaints about unauthorized withdrawals totaling $1,436 from bank accounts. Police said Mota, McCoy and Marque Harris of Bridgeport were involved. Police said Harris, who was arrested on May 18, offered to pay other peoples bills and told them he could match whatever payment they made to pay off the bills quicker. Police said Harris would use other peoples account information to make payments. McCoy, police said, paid her own bills by this method and also recruited other clients for Harris.
Police said Mota, who was dating Harris, worked as a real estate agent for a victim who paid Mota by check for her commission. Police said the victims checking account was compromised weeks later. The check Mota received contained the necessary information to make the unauthorized withdrawals.
McCoy was ordered held on $30,000 bond. According to state court records, she is next scheduled to appear on July 31 in Norwalk Superior Court. Mota was released on $60,000 bond and according to the Norwalk Court Clerk's office, she is scheduled to return to court on Aug. 28.
