The Wilton Board of Education approved such searches in spring to ensure school safety, and the school community was notified of Friday's search by letters, according to The Hour.
During the K9 search of the student parking lot, there were several “hits” by the police dogs on vehicles, Wilton police Capt. John P. Lynch said in a statement.
The vehicles were cleared with no drugs located, he said.
However, one vehicle remained unchecked, Lynch said. Once the operator was located, the vehicle was searched and a very small amount of suspected marijuana was found inside, he said.
The student is a juvenile, and the case remains under investigation, Lynch said.
As part of the search, police dogs from police departments in Wilton, Norwalk, Newtown, Monroe, Stratford and Darien were deployed, according to The Hour.
Students and staff members were held in their classrooms on lockdown as officers and canines conducted the search of lockers and locker rooms as well as the parking lots, The Hour said.
Police dogs "hit" on several lockers, but they were empty, The Hour said.
The canines used in the search are trained to detect marijuana, cocaine, heroin, opiates and methamphetamines, according to Officer Steven Rangel, who handles police dog, Enzo, for the Wilton Police Department.
