According to a statement from Capt. John P. Lynch, police received a call at about 11:15 a.m. from a concerned person at the Wilton Library who reported suspicious and abandoned backpacks at the front entrance.
Officers immediately responded and located three bags that had been placed adjacent to the main entrance of the Wilton Library, Lynch said.
They attempted to identify the owner. But after no one claimed ownership, it was decided that the library should be evacuated as a precautionary measure, Lynch said.
The Wilton Police assisted with the evacuation and contacted the Stamford Bomb Squad, who responded. The Wilton Fire Department also responded and stood by as a precaution, he said.
Wilton police officers reviewed the internal video system and discovered that a library employee had inadvertently placed the three bags outside the door, Lynch said.
Once confirmation was made with the staff member, the bomb squad was canceled, the library reopened and the bags were removed, he said.
The library was closed for about 45 minutes during the investigation, Lynch said.
