Herbert F. Roome, 88, Of Wilton, Retired Employee Of McGraw-Hill

WILTON, Conn. - Herbert F. Roome of Wilton died July 30. He was 88.

Roome was born Feb. 9, 1925, in Valley Stream, N.Y., son of Edna and Roy Roome. He was a Wilton resident since 1967. He served in the European Theatre during World War II and in the Army Reserve until his retirement as captain, Infantry, USAR. He graduated from Union College in Schenectady, N.Y., in 1952. His entire business career was in the computer/communications field. For five years, he was an adjunct professor at American University in Washington, D.C. After retiring from McGraw-Hill in December 1990, he was retained as a consultant.

He also served as the assistant animal control officer in Wilton for many years. His past activities included tutoring for the Literacy Volunteers of Fairfield County, Town Meeting Member (Reading, Mass.), director of the National Payphone Association, Church school teacher and youth group leader, Meals on Wheels volunteer, Reserve Officer's Association and president of Ring #97 International Brotherhood of Magicians. He was also a member of the Wilton Historical Society.

Roome is survived by his wife, Phoebe Lou; daughters, Kathleen R. Ullrich, Melinda S. R. Mears, and Elizabeth W. R. Joy; 10 grandchildren; and three great granddaughters. He was predeceased by his parents; and his wife, Marilyn W. Roome.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Aug. 10 at Wilton Congregational Church . Contributions may be made to the Town of Wilton Animal Shelter.
