WILTON, Conn. Emily Del Mar Muller, a former Wilton and Westport librarian, died Sept. 2 at Deerfield Retirement Community in Asheville, N.C. She was 93.
Muller was born Dec. 25, 1918, in New York City to Breta Longacre and William Alexander Del Mar. She attended the Greenwich Academy and married Ralph Edward Chapman, a commercial pilot for Pan American, just as World War II started.
During the war, she served as a nurse at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami and became a mother.
Following the war, she divorced and moved with her two young sons to Chapel Hill, N.C., and received a bachelor's degree in art history and a master's degree in library science.
Muller then moved to Germany, where she worked as a librarian in a secondary school for Army dependents. She planned every weekend and took her children all over Germany and Belgium, teaching them about medieval and Renaissance art.
After a year overseas, Muller returned to Westport where she worked in the public library. She later worked in the Wilton school system as the head high school librarian for many years.
In July of 1963, she married Robert Muller. Upon retirement, she indulged her love of traveling with her husband, visiting Alaska, Mexico, Turkey, China, France and Italy. Her husband died in 1987 and she moved to Asheville, where she continued her support of the League of Women Voters, Planned Parenthood and the Unitarian Church until moving to Deerfield.
Muller is survived by two sons, Dr. William E. Chapman, of Asheville, and Ralph L. Chapman, of San Raphael, Calif.; a sister, Eleanor Revill, of Rocky Hill, Conn.; a stepdaughter, Ilona Muller, of Cincinnati; and four grandchildren. She was predeceased by a brother, John Del Mar.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Oct. 28, at Deerfield Retirement Community Chapel.
