Wilton Fire Department: Cause of Blaze Unknown

NORWALK, Conn. – The cause of a Sunday afternoon fire in a Wilton condo complex has not yet been established, according to Wilton Fire Marshal David Kohn.

The fire at Wilton Crest off Wolfpit Road damaged 14 or 15 units of the condominium complex, Kohn said. Fire crews from Westport, New Canaan, Weston and Norwalk helped to battle the blaze, and one New Canaan firefighter was sent to the hospital. A spokesman for the New Canaan Fire Department said the firefighter is "fine" and is back at work.

"We don't have any cause on the fire," Kohn said. "We still have potentially several means that could have been a cause. But we have not isolated or separated out at this point a particular cause that we're confident to make a call on at this point. But we're fairly confident that the fire did originate outside and communicate to the building and got into it."

Four units cannot be occupied because of "severe or fairly extreme" damage, Kohn said. Three or four other units were damaged to a lesser extent, with either burned exterior siding or damage from smoke. The power was cut to 14 to 15 units, but most will be able to be restored. Other services were cut as well and must be restored before residents can return home.

A Red Cross spokesman was not available for comment.
