Wilton Cancels Memorial Day Parade

It really did rain on the parade in Wilton. Or it would have.

Heavy rain and thunder and lightning Monday left parade organizers little choice but to cancel the parade. Instead, they scheduled an 11 a.m. ceremony at the Congregational Church on Old Ridgefield Road.

"It's very, very disappointing for everybody, after all the preparation and planning but we had to cancel it," said Parade Chairman Bing Ventres, former commander of American Legion Post 86 in Wilton. "With the thunder and lightning, we couldn't take a chance on someone getting hurt."

Instead, Vetres said an hourlong ceremony will be held at the church and some parade participants will take part. "This has only happened once or twice in all the years I've been involved," said Ventres. "But we can't control the weather."
