What's On Your Mind, Wilton?

WILTON, Conn. – Preparing a child for kindergarten, packing before a return to college and November’s general election were some of the things on the minds of people in Wilton when we spoke with them Thursday afternoon.

Sisters Alysia and Jessica Weiner were picking up a few things at the Wilton Library. Alysia, 19, was thinking of how much stuff she has to pack before returning to Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., for her junior year. “I’m just getting ready … and finishing up a few minor errands,” Alysia said. “I’m excited to go back but being back home has been nice.”

Jessica, 13, was anxious to get a look at her schedule as she prepares to start eighth grade at Middlebrook School. She’s happy to go back because “I miss my friends. One of them goes away to camp all summer and I haven’t seen her in three months,” Jessica said. Still, school has its drawbacks. “I like not having homework,” she said with a laugh.

Mary Hoermann just finished getting a book to read with her daughter Grace, 5, who will enter kindergarten at Miller-Driscoll School. “We’ve been doing lots of phonics,” she said. “We went to an open house this week, and we’ll meet the teacher next week.”

Jay Zelesnick of Wilton was thinking of the fall elections as he left the Wilton Library on Thursday afternoon. A supporter of President Barack Obama, Zelesnick said he fears what could happen to the country if Republicans win office. “It will be the end of the United States of America,” he said. “We should all move to Australia.”

As Zelesnick was on the way out, Chris Kotos, 22, was heading inside to study for a certified public accountant exam. The recent graduate of Bryant University in Rhode Island gave a wry smile as he prepared to bury his head in the books. “I’d like to stay out, but I need to start earning some money,” he said.

Kim Castellano, 42, of Seymour, was returning books while on break from Bottom Line Technologies. The library is a great place, she said. “I’ve always told the staff that this is my favorite library,” Castellano said. “Everyone is so nice.”
