The snowy winter and rainy spring have prompted Wilton Go Green to extend the deadline of its Walk in the Woods contest to July 1. The idea is to encourage residents of all ages to get out and hike Wiltons trails.
But the weather limited opportunities for "nice hikes on Wilton's trails in our parks and open spaces," contest leaders said. The event began in the fall and was supposed to end June 1.
Wilton residents will have now have an extra month to walk some or all of the 12 trails highlighted for the event, which allows participants to take part in a July 4th drawing to win an 18-speed Cannondale Adventure bike and other smaller prizes.
Sponsors, in addition to Wilton Go Green, are the Wilton Library, Wilton Family YMCA, Alliance for a Healthy Community, Wilton Conservation Commission and Wilton Land Trust.
"As everyone knows, It's been raining just about every day, so we thought we would give people a chance to get out there on the trails for another month, and that the July 4th fireworks festivities would be a terrific time to do the drawing for prizes," said Wilton Go Green President Becky Bunnell.
"The whole purpose of the contest was to get people to go outdoors and discover all the great places to hike and walk in Wilton," she said. "Hopefully, the weather starts cooperating."
Walkers can follow the trails at their own pace or on a guided tour and note the dates of hikes on the entry form (available at the Conservation Commission office/Town Hall Annex, or via download at wiltongogreen.org/eventsprograms).
Entrants must submit their forms by July 1 to be included in the grand prize drawing on July 4. Participants will also be entered for a separate drawing for each park walk.
Trails and trail maps are posted online at www.wiltonct.org or on the town Conservation Department website. For more information call (203) 563-0180 or email info@wiltongogreen.org.
