Take a Hike in Wilton on Trails Day

Hikers and anyone eager for a guided tour through some Wilton land proposed for the 27-mile Norwalk River Valley Trail from Norwalk to Danbury are in luck on National Trails Day, June 4.

Staff from the Weir Farm National Historic Site, the Norwalk River Watershed Association and the new Norwalk River Valley Trail Steering Committee will be leading a free guided hike through land proposed for trail, from 10 a.m. to noon.

During the hike, group leaders will discuss the collaborative five-town planning efforts under way to establish the trail.

"I can't think of a better way to celebrate National Trails Day than taking a hike along this incredible trail that could become part of the Norwalk River Valley's official trail," said Cassie Werne, a ranger for the National Park Service. "This is a tremendous opportunity for people walk some of the land and see what is being proposed for the trail. It's also a great place to just go for a hike."

Stretching from Norwalk to Danbury, the multiuse trail is envisioned to accommodate all modes of non-motored recreation use. The trail would link Norwalk, Wilton, Ridgefield, Redding and Danbury.

The informative 4- to 5-mile hike on June 4 will include walking along land owned by the National Park Service, the Town of Ridgefield Open Space, the Town of Wilton Open Space and Connecticut Department of Transportation land.

"This hike will provide a great opportunity to discuss regional land conservation, land-use history, watershed management, and plant and animal identification," according to a statement released by the National Park Service.
