The notorious Wilton YMCA "locker room thief" has been apprehended after allegedly being caught stealing money from a locker Tuesday, police said.
Police arrested 20-year-old Christopher Corvese, 89 Cannon Road, Wilton, at the town's YMCA on Danbury Road at noon Tuesday shortly after Y officials notified them that the men's locker thief was on the premises and had struck again.
In recent weeks, six lockers have been broken into and cash taken, YMCA Executive Director Robert McDowell said. "We are, of course, very relieved this individual was apprehended after the recent locker thefts," McDowell said. "We have 32 cameras at our facility, and with our staff working in cooperation with the police, we are happy to have had this individual arrested."
Police said Corvese, who is not a Y member and had been warned not to enter the building after similar charges were lodged against him about three years ago, was charged Tuesday with first-degree criminal trespass, third-degree burglary and sixth-degree larceny.
Wilton Police Lt. Donald Wakeman said Corvese was released after posting $5,000 bond and will be arraigned May 27 in Norwalk Superior Court.
"When he was arrested, he admitted to stealing $80 from a locker at the Y on Tuesday," Wakeman said. "He is also a suspect at this time in the other thefts there as well, which are under investigation."
Police said the suspect was "told not to use the YMCA" but upon several occasions "snuck past personnel and used the facility."
