Rabbi Jeremy Wiederhorn of the Conservative Synagogue of Westport, Weston and Wilton gave an opening prayer Tuesday in the U.S. House of Representatives as guest chaplain, the same day Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu addressed a joint session of Congress. Wiederhorn was invited by U.S. Rep. Jim Himes, D-4th District.
In his prayer, Wiederhorn asked God to "provide us with the integrity, wisdom, and patience to listen to those with whom we do not agree and learn from those who we might otherwise not hear." He also asked God to bless our government's leaders and to allow them to see the future without forgetting the past.
"It was an honor to host Rabbi Wiederhorn as the guest chaplain for the U.S. House on the day the prime minister of Israel addressed a joint session Congress," Himes said in a statement. "His advice to 'learn from those we might not otherwise hear' provided timely guidance for our work on the nation's most challenging issues, and I appreciated his insight into the prime minister's speech."
Wiederhorn has served the synagogue since July 2008. Before his arrival in Westport, he was the rabbi of a temple in Nevada for eight years. Wiederhorn earned a bachelor of arts in Judaic studies from the University of California, a master's in Hebrew letters from the University of Judaism and a master's with his rabbinic ordination from the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York.
He and his wife Rebecca have been married for 14 years and have three children.
