Joseph Mazan, 83, Former Wilton Resident

WILTON, Conn. — Joseph Mazan, formerly of Wilton, died Tuesday, Sept. 6, at Danbury Hospital after battling Parkinson's disease for the last 10 years. He was 83.

He was the husband of Bernice Szostak-Mazan, with whom he recently celebrated his 55th anniversary.

He was born Jan. 18, 1928, in Greenwich, the only child of Anna Chmielowiec-Mazan and John Mazan. He grew up in Port Chester, N.Y.

Mazan graduated from Port Chester High School and received his bachelor's and master's degrees from New York University. He was a woodshop teacher at Dolan Middle School in Stamford for 35 years until retiring in 1986.

He lived in Port Chester until 1970. Before moving to Redding in 1999, he lived in Wilton for 17 years, where he designed and built his home.

In addition to his wife Bernice, he is survived by his daughter Wanda Mazan-Augustyn, granddaughter Annabelle Augustyn, and son-in-law Roman Augustyn, all of Redding.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Patrick Church in Redding last Friday.
