Not having an opponent did not stop State Representative John Hetherington from reaching out to the 125th District during Tuesdays election. The Republican Incumbent spent the day between New Canaan and Wilton meeting his constituency.
I like to show people I dont take it for granted, Hetherington said standing outside Miller-Driscoll School in Wilton.
Each person that approached the polling place was greeted with a smile and a handshake as Hetherington would introduce himself. He also handed out his business card to people requesting that they contact him if they ever need or want his opinion on an issue in the district.
Even though District 125 is known for supporting the Republican Party Hetherington did say he tries to remain respectful of the views of both parties. He also said that he was pleased with the approval he has within his own district.
I have a good relationship with the people and it has paid off, Hetherington said.
Hetherington believes that the practice of being respectful of differing opinions is also the key to fixing the states fiscal situation as well as other problems Hartford is facing. He was also hopeful that more Republicans would be elected allowing the two sides to be more equal in strength and willing to others ideas.
You can accomplish a lot if you dont care who gets the credit, Hetherington said quoting the late President Ronald Reagan.
Hetherington was first elected in 2002 and will be serving his fifth term representing the 125th district in the Connecticut General Assembly. His term will end in 2012.
