The incident happened at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, April 8, in the area south of Sharp Hill Road, Wilton police said.
"The involved dog was leashed, however, broke free of its owner upon observation of the coyote," police said in a statement. "Contrary to earlier reports, the dog was not injured during the encounter."
The Wilton Loop of the NRVT remains closed Sunday.
"The Wilton Police Department Animal Control Officer is working closely with representatives of the NRVT to ensure a safe reopening of the trail for all its users and pets," police said in a statement Sunday.
Charlie Taney, NRVT's executive director, also posted about the incident on Facebook.
"The police are putting up yellow tape and signs at the entrances to the Wilton Loop," he said.
