Beer Question Brings Wilton Voters Out ... Slowly

WILTON, Conn. – Voters in Wilton haven't been coming out in droves to vote, but they have been voting.

As of 3 p.m., 1,477 residents cast their votes - that's 13 percent of the total voting population, the town reported.

Some 385 voters had cast ballots at Middlebrook Middle Schoo as of 2 p.m., Moderator Jim Birch said.

"It's an uncontested ballot, and the question on beer sales just hasn't brought the numbers out," Birch said.

And the beer question was the reason that Diana McConnell, 16-year resident of Wilton, came out to vote. "My husband and I are voting against it," McConnell said. She explained that they would rather support the liquor stores.

Hella McSweeney said she couldn't remember an election this uncontested since she started voting in Wilton 10 years ago. And when it came to the question on beer sales, she said she voted for it.

"I think shoppers should have a choice. Why should Wilton be any different?"

Polling stations are open until 8 p.m. Polling places are located at:

• District 1 - Wilton High School David Clune Center for the Arts

• District 2 - Driscoll School Gym

• District 3 - Middlebrook School Gym
