WILTON, Conn. A case of possible poor sportsmanship led Wilton Police to issue court summonses to two New Canaan residents who officers say verbally and physically attacked an umpire at a youth softball tournament this past week.
Terrence Dinan, 38, and Andrea Dinan, 37, both of 56 Parade Hill Road, New Canaan, are scheduled to appear in Norwalk Superior Court on Aug. 8 to face misdemeanor charges of second degree breach of peace.
According to the Wilton Police report, the alleged incident took place Sunday, July 24, around 1:45 p.m. at the Middlebrook School after an umpire ejected spectator Andrea and coach Terrence. The chief umpire, who was not wearing a uniform, told police he observed Andrea cursing at the official who had ejected the two.
After the chief umpire told the two suspects to leave, they reportedly turned on him. The chief umpire told police Andrea started to curse at him and waved her middle finger in his direction. Then, according to the police report, Terrence stepped in and began to yell and spit at the chief umpire.
Witnesses told police as the chief umpire pushed Terrence away, the suspect reportedly punched him in the jaw.
Wilton Police Lt. Donald Wakeman said Terrence and Andrea Dinan told officers because the chief umpire was dressed in shorts and a T-shirt, they did not know he was one of the tournament officials. Wakeman added that the two suspects will not face assault charges because the chief umpire told police he was not injured.
