Sunshine Warms Chill at Compo Beach

WESTPORT, Conn. – It may have been cold, but people still headed out to Compo Beach in Westport to enjoy a sunny, if brisk, day at the beach Sunday.

For Westport resident Stephanie Dietz, it was a way to get her two boys, ages 5 and 8, out of the house.

“They need exercise,” Dietz said. Her sons initially didn’t want to go, saying it was too cold. “Then they have a great time” on the playground, she said. “It’s good to have fresh air, even if it’s cold air."

Dietz went with her brother, John Dietz of Bristol, who brought his dog, Tosca, for a run. “It’s nice to have a place to get the dog exercised,” he said.

Stephanie’s son Matthew Shlomechik, 8, enjoyed watching dogs run on the sand. And looking at dogs is one of Ralph and Lorraine Adams’ favorite things to do while they walk up and down Compo Road.

“We live vicariously through the dog owners,” said Lorraine, because the couple doesn’t have a dog of their own. The walk is something they do whenever they can. The view of the beach makes Lorraine feel like she is on vacation.

“I feel very lucky to live here,” Lorraine said. She and husband Ralph have lived in Westport for 20 years. “It’s a break from the regular day to day.”

Was it crowded? “I would say it’s a typical Sunday,” Ralph said. “If it was warmer though, we’d see more people.”

High temperatures were in the mid 40s on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service. Skies should be sunny again Monday, with a high near 40 degrees.
