Getting the Hang of Wreath Making

When Julie Bloys brought her 4-year-old, Ava, to Wilton’s Woodcock Nature Center on Saturday morning, she had never used a glue gun before much less decorate a wreath.  But that didn’t stop the Bloys as they completed a wreath as part of Woodcock’s Annual Wreath Festival.

“It is a lot of fun,” Bloys said, agreeing with Ava that the two should participate every year.

Lacking experience, the Bloys were fortunate to decorate their wreath next to Kathy Rooney and her children, Brigid, Brendan, and Brian who are veteran wreath makers, having done it for the past 12 years. The Rooneys gave  the Bloys advice on techniques and designs they could use to beautify their wreath and helped with anything they needed.

Kathy Rooney started the tradition of creating a wreath at Woodcock when Brigid was young and continued it as the boys were born.  To make keep everyone contented, Rooney says she and her kids put whatever decorative item they have wherever they want until they finish.

“As long as everyone is happy, the wreath looks beautiful,” Rooney said, drawing laughter and eye-rolls from her kids.

The wreath festival is Woodcock’s largest fund-raiser and has grown in popularity each year.  To accommodate everyone who wishes to take part, the nature center offered to have eight ladies night wreath making sessions as well as the Family Day on Saturday.

The festival concludes next week with ladies night sessions at 6:30 and 8:15 Dec. 7 through Dec. 10. Space is limited and registration is required. The registration fee is $50. Registration is online only. PayPal and credit cards are accepted.

Did you make your own wreath this year?  If you send me pictures of yourself and the wreath, I will put them up on the site.  Email me at tbuzzeo@mainstreetconnect.us.
