Episcopal Priest to Hold Healing Service

When the Rev. Nigel Mumford was hospitalized in 2009 with the H1N1 virus and pneumonia, he slipped into a coma that lasted 19 days. He attributes his recovery to the power of prayer, a message he plans to advocate at a healing service in Greenwich next weekend.

"Saying a prayer for a sick loved one has been a comforting and moving experience for many," Mumford, director of Healing Ministries at Christ the King Spiritual Center in Greenwich, N.Y., said in a statement. "I believe something always happens when we pray."

Mumford said he believes in today's chaotic world, the request for healing prayer is increasingly in demand. Healing is sought, he said, for disease and injury, physical or emotional pain, memories or loss, generational concerns, depression, anger and despair. "'Healed' is not synonymous with 'cured,'" he said. "When a healing does occur, it may or may not include a cure."

Mumford will discuss healing at the service to be held at the Christ Church Chapel, 254 E. Putnam Ave., Greenwich, at 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 14.

The service is presented through Conversations on Courage and Faith, a series of lectures, artistic performances and spiritual experiences aimed to inspire and help people live Christianity in a postmodern world. Mumford, an Episcopal priest, will have musical accompaniment by Sean Witty.

Mumford, a native of England, moved to the U.S. in 1980 and set up the Mumford Company Inc., a picture framing business in Wilton and Bethel, which he owned and operated for 13 years.
