WILTON, Conn. -- The Don Friedman Harvie S Duo opens the Wilton Library's Hot & Cool: Jazz at the Brubeck Room concert series Sunday at 4 p.m.

The two musicians have performed worldwide, appeared on hundreds of recordings and even become educators to pass on their knowledge and passion for music.

Don Friedman started playing piano at age 4. Though he had no exposure to jazz, he taught himself to improvise. He eventually studied jazz at Los Angeles City College, while displaying his hard bop credentials by gigging with Dexter Gordon. He made his first records as a sideman with trumpeters Hank DeMano and Jack Millman.

Buddy DeFranco hired Friedman for a tour that included gigs at New York’s Birdland and Basin Street. He recorded as a leader for producer Orrin Keepnews at Riverside records in the early ’60s, winning critical acclaim. By 1965, Friedman had been named a New Star in Down Beat's annual Critics’ Poll.

Harvie S has been a presence in jazz since the 1970s and has appeared on hundreds of recordings, including classic dates with pianist Steve Kuhn, vocalist Sheila Jordan and his own many varied ensembles. He is an award-winning bassist, composer, arranger, educator and producer.

This is his fifth performance in the Brubeck Room. The musicians will perform a compilation of jazz standards. An informal reception follows the concert at which CDs will be available for purchase and signing.

The suggested donation for the concert is $10 per person.

The Hot & Cool jazz series is funded by the William and Karen Tell Foundation with special thanks to Catherine and Ed Romer, and Tish and Chris Brubeck. Advance registration is recommended for this popular concert series. Those who are pre-registered should arrive by 3:50 p.m. to be guaranteed seating; wait-listed and walk-ins will be seated after 3:50 if space is available.
